Which waterproof tag material is right for you?

"Waterproof" covers a few different materials. Here is how the common options behave, so you can pick the right one for where your tag will live.

A quick rule of thumb: choose PVC when you want a sturdy, card-like tag with bright color; choose synthetic paper when you want a lighter, paper-feel tag that is easy to write on; and choose paper hang tags only for products that stay dry. One technical note: PP synthetic paper is chlorine-free, while PVC contains chlorine. That can matter if your customers or retail partners ask about it.

Swimwear, rain jackets, fishing and camping gear, and anything sold outdoors or shipped through humid warehouses. Waterproof swing tags keep the brand, size and price legible after rain, a wet changing room or a damp stockroom. Design and file tips for plastic hang tags

• Set up at final size with 1/8 in (0.125 in) bleed on every side, and keep text and logos at least 1/8 in inside the trim line.
• Leave the hole area clear. Keep important text and logos at least 1/4 in away from the hole on every side. Mark the hole position on a separate layer, or tell us in the order notes.
• Use vector artwork when you can. Print-ready PDF, AI or EPS files give the sharpest text and barcodes. For JPG, PNG, PSD or TIFF, use 300 dpi at the finished size.
• Use CMYK color. Bright RGB greens and blues can print duller than they look on screen.
• Designing for clear or frosted PVC? These materials have no white base. Colors print slightly see-through, and white elements disappear unless you ask for a white ink layer. Tell us which parts should be opaque, and we'll show the white layer in your proof.
• Small text: keep body text at 6 pt or larger, and barcodes at their recommended minimum size, with a quiet zone around them.
• Two-sided tags: send front and back as separate pages or files, and tell us which way the back should face (head-to-head or head-to-foot).

How to order custom waterproof hang tags

1. Choose your options. Pick the material, thickness, size, shape, printed sides and quantity.
2. Upload your artwork. Send PDF, AI, EPS, PSD, JPG, PNG or TIFF files up to 50 MB, and add notes about the hole position or white ink.
3. Check your free digital proof. We check your file and send a digital proof showing the trim, hole position and any white ink areas. Corrections before approval are free.
4. Approve and we produce. Production starts when you approve the proof: 8 business days for most options, 10 for clear PVC. Your order is printed and cut at our factory in Dongguan, China.

Frequently asked questions

Are plastic hang tags really waterproof?

Yes. PVC and PP synthetic paper are plastics, so they do not absorb water the way paper does. The tag will not soften, curl or tear when it gets wet. The ink sits on the surface, so long-term outdoor use, heavy abrasion or harsh chemicals can still wear the print over time. For tags that stay outdoors for months, test one in your conditions first.

What is the difference between PVC and synthetic paper tags?

PVC hang tags feel like a thin plastic card. They are smooth and sturdy, and they come in white, frosted or clear. Synthetic paper is a polypropylene film made to look and feel like matte paper. It is lighter, tear-resistant and easier to write on with pencil or ballpoint. Choose PVC for a premium, card-like feel, and synthetic paper for plant, price and inventory tags.

Do waterproof hang tags come with string?

No, strings and fasteners are not included. Every tag has a drilled 1/8 in hole at the top center, and you can ask for a 3/16 in hole, a corner position or no hole. The hole fits standard cotton or jute string, ribbon, elastic loops, plastic tag fasteners, and thin cable ties or wire, so you can attach the tags the way that suits your product.

Can I print on both sides of a clear hang tag?

Clear PVC tags are printed on one side. The tag is transparent, so a second side would show through and mix with the front design. If you need two readable sides, choose white PVC, frosted PVC or synthetic paper, which can all be printed on both sides. On clear tags you can add a white ink layer behind your colors so they stay bright and opaque.

How many tags can I order, and how much do they cost?

You can order from 100 tags, in runs of 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,500 or 5,000, and larger quantities by quote. On 2 × 3.5 in tags, 100 start at $45 on synthetic paper and $53 on white PVC. How long does it take to get custom plastic hang tags?

Production takes 8 business days after you approve your free digital proof, or 10 business days for clear PVC. Standard shipping to US addresses then takes 12–15 days. The clock starts at proof approval, so sending print-ready artwork and approving the proof quickly keeps your schedule on track. Transit times are estimates, not carrier guarantees.

Are your paper hang tags waterproof?

No. Our 14 pt matte paper clothing hang tags are made for dry indoor retail. Paper can absorb water, soften and tear when it gets wet. If your tags will face rain, ice, sprinklers, condensation or a lot of handling, choose the PVC or synthetic paper tags on this page. They keep the same hang tag format and are made to handle moisture.
